Long Beach Dismisses Leading Scorer

By Sue Favor

Long Beach State has dismissed senior Whitney Fields from the team, a ‘49ers spokesperson confirmed to Full Court Monday.  The 6-1 forward was the team’s leading scorer with 12.6 points per game and was named to the All-Big West second team last season. Fields, who notched a season high of 30 points against New Mexico State last December, was also the Big West’s top rebounder with 8.7 boards per game.

Fields ranked among the top 10 in the Big West in multiple categories, including scoring, field-goal percentage (40.1 percent), free throw percentage (72.5 percent), steals (49) and blocks (28).

The Monsignor Pace (Dade County, Florida) grad red-shirted the 2007-08 season after transferring to Long Beach from Arizona, where she spent her freshman and sophomore seasons mainly on the bench but was still voted the team’s “Most Inspirational Player.” The team has not disclosed the reasons for her dismissal from Long Beach, other than to cite a “violation of team rules.”
