Xavier, Dayton Fall in Top 25 Upsets; Oklahoma Escapes in Overtime

By Lee Michaelson

The No. 6 Xavier Musketeers have become the latest Top 25 team to feel the sting of a Spartan upset, falling 53-66 to No. 17 Michigan State tonight in East Lansing. It was the second time in a week that the Spartans knocked off a Top 10 team. Last week, Michigan State, toppled the Tar Heels of North Carolina (then No. 4, now No. 13) from the ranks of the unbeaten. Unfortunately, the Spartans followed up that accomplishment with a sloppy loss to Indiana last weekend, and forfeited any bump in their ranking.  Xavier falls to 7-1 on the season; Michigan State improves its record to 6-3.

In a much closer game, the University of Toledo overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to snap the seven-game winning streak enjoyed by No. 20 Dayton in a 68-65 upset. The Flyers fall to 8-2, while Toledo improves to 6-2.

Meanwhile, No. 16 Oklahoma narrowly escaped becoming the third nationally ranked team to fall on the same night, edging out an unranked but well-respected Marist squad, 80-71, in overtime.
